Acne Scarring Treatment in Melbourne

Acne Scarring Treatments

Chroma Dermatology’s acne scarring treatment plan usually combines a few different modes of treatment to achieve the best possible results. This is because different types of scarring require slightly different treatments to get the best results.

Treatment modalities that are commonly used to treat acne scars at Chroma Dermatology include:
  • TCA CROSS (hyperlink to page)
  • VivaceTM Radiofrequency Microneedling (hyperlink to RF microneedling)
  • PicoSureTM non ablative laser (for both scars and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation)
  • Dekka SmartXideTM Fully ablative and fractional ablative lasers (hyperlink to page)
  • Dekka CoolPeelTM laser (hyperlink to page)
  • Subcision (for tethered scars)
  • Cutera GenesisTM Laser (for redness on the skin after pimples clear)

The process

  • Firstly, our specialist dermatologists will take a medical history and comprehensively assess your skin type, texture and scar types to individually tailor your treatment plan

  • Our acne scarring treatments can be safely performed on all skin types
  • Our carefully selected state-of-the-art technology enables safe and effective treatment in those with skin of colour (Asian skin, darker skin types and pigmented skin)
  • We provide numbing creams and local anaesthetic when required

Acne scarring (ice pick, boxcar, rolling scars etc) is caused by intense inflammation in the deep dermal layer of the skin. Usually at a microscopic level, there is destruction of the hair/oil gland unit, which causes collagen in the second layer of the skin to become  affected, resulting in scar tissue development.

To improve acne scars, we need to stimulate the skin to create new collagen. This process is called neocollagenesis. The most effective ways we stimulate collagen production in acne scars is with  VivaceTM Radiofrequency Microneedling,  PicoSureTM laser and our

Dekka SmartXideTM laser. We also improve icepick and deep scars using TCA CROSS and punch excision. Click here to read more about TCA CROSS. The exact methods and combinations used will be based on your initial medical consultation.

Lumpy scars (hypertrophic and keloid scars), most common on the back, chest, shoulders and jawline are best treated with a series of corticosteroid injections.

The need for numbing cream or local anaesthetic depends on the type of treatment you require. TCA CROSS and some of our laser devices do not require anaesthetics or numbing creams, but other treatment modalities do. This will be discussed with you at your consultation.

This depends on your scar type and severity as well as your personal preferences. Severe acne scarring usually requires more treatment compared to mild to moderate acne scars.

At Chroma Dermatology, we will give you an opportunity to tell us about your preferences for downtime and the results you wish to achieve. Some patients seek the minimal downtime and others desire rapid results and are happy with longer downtime.

We prefer to be gentle with treatments so that we can optimise results while minimising downtime and side effects. So, most of our patients end up having 3-5 treatments of things like laser and microneedling, or 2 sessions of TCA CROSS.

Your treating dermatologist will give you a guide as to the number of treatments best suited for your scarring type.

Treatments are usually spaced about 4-12 weeks apart. Results are best judged 3 months after each procedure as renewed collagen production may take up to 3 months after your treatment.

Recovery time will be discussed with you at your consultation  as this depends on your acne scarring severity, type and treatment modalities that will be used in your individualised treatment plan. The great news is that Chroma Dermatology have options with minimal to no downtime through to aggressive fully fractional ablative more lasers.
